Technical Authoring

Documentation is often the last thing written and the first thing blamed. A system can be well designed, well built and well tested, and still let people down in service because the person holding the manual cannot find the step they need, or cannot trust the one they find. Our technical authoring starts with that person: who will use the document, what they already know, where they will be and what they will be doing. We write for them, not just to satisfy a line in the contract.

Many projects end up with a different set of documents for every system, each with its own structure, terms and style, so people have to relearn how to find things each time they move to new equipment. We write one set of documentation that works across multiple systems. The layout, the language and the way warnings, steps and limits are presented are the same throughout, so someone who knows one system can find their way around the next, and the information is consistent wherever it appears.

Our authors are engineers, and they test and prove each process before it is released. A procedure is not finished when it is written; it is finished when it has been followed as written and shown to work. Our engineers have operated, maintained and fixed equipment in the conditions it was built for, so they know what a procedure has to survive in the real world, and where a drawing or datasheet does not tell the whole story, they keep asking until it does. The first time anyone follows the instructions should not be the first time they have been tried.

We also produce flight and mission reference cards. These distil the documentation down to what the crew needs at the point of use, in a form that can be read at a glance when there is no time to turn to a manual. They come from the same tested and proven source material as the rest of the set, so the card in the crew’s hands says the same thing as the full documentation.

Because we are independent, we write what is accurate and useful to you, not what suits a particular supplier or product. We review drafts with the people who will rely on them, and we keep the content consistent as the system changes. Whether you need a new set of documents, a review of the ones you have, or help bringing a supplier’s documentation up to a standard you can accept, we will shape the work around where your project is.
